What Is a Midwife?

A certified-nurse midwife (CNM) specializes in the care of women across their lifespan. This includes independent provision of gynecologic and family planning services, prenatal care, care during labor, birth, and postpartum. CNMs perform physical exams, make diagnoses, and order and interpret lab and diagnostic tests. They also prescribe medications, including medications for contraception and contraceptive medical devices. The CNMs at CT Coastal OB/GYN have YNHH privileges to admit, manage, and discharge patients.

Benefits of Using a Midwife

Every year, more women are choosing to use a midwife for their pregnancy. While providing care, they offer continuous support throughout the duration of the pregnancy and delivery, with the least interventions necessary. This exciting new journey of parenthood is something that a midwife can help you navigate.

Our experienced midwives can help manage birth and pregnancy and recognize when complications requiring obstetrician care is needed. A midwife’s main focus is providing moms-to-be with physical, emotional, and psychological support throughout the duration of the pregnancy. They make sure all women are properly cared for, answer any questions, and address any concerns in pregnancy, during labor, and after delivery. This will help ensure every woman feels comfortable and confident in being the best mom that they can be.

Midwives take a comprehensive approach to prenatal care and support patient’s decisions about the use of pain medication during labor and how a new mom will proceed with feeding her newborn. Midwives give women the information they need to make the choices that are right for them. The trust you instill in getting to know your midwife means that your needs will be taken care of through labor, birth, and postpartum. Midwives can also help you get connected to support groups with other new moms that may be struggling, have questions about breastfeeding, or are dealing with postpartum depression.
